Mayor Jed Leano leads a “walking school bus” out of the parking lot at the Hughes Center en route to Condit Elementary School on Wednesday. Leano learned from a Berkeley traffic engineer that other cities were forming walking bus groups, and decided to organize one here after noticing that many people were driving very short distances to school. He has also read studies stating that over the last four decades walking to school is statistically down, while childhood obesity is up. The walking bus will continue for the next three Wednesdays to close out the school year, with hope that it will return in the fall.
